Akosua “Naana” Ohene

 Her Story

What began as a childhood curiosity for her grandmother’s wondrous sewing room, followed by the manipulation of most of the purchased clothing in her closet, Akosua “Naana” Ohene was destined to fall in love with the art of sewing and pursue a career in fashion.

Early on, Naana—as she is affectionately called—was hesitant about chasing a career solely in fashion. She enrolled at Pace University majoring in Political Science with an Anthropology/ Sociology and Peace Studies Minor. Never denying the urge to be creative she continued to alter necklines, change buttons and hems to suit her personal style. In the winter of 2008 Naana had an epiphany. She used her Christmas money to purchase her first sewing machine and returned to her grandmother’s sewing room. The same sewing room she had watched her grandmother work in.

As a production intern for Nicole Miller in 2014, she assisted with model fittings, hard and soft patterns and spec samples, working several season; Spring 15, Fall 15, Fall 16—of New York Fashion Week with the fashion house.

All this led to 2016 where Ohene launched her own line YIRENKYI (YEE.REN.CHI) Couturier, her first collection. The successful debut showcased feminine yet edgy, black and white pieces for the every day confident woman. Ohene is presently developing the IAMYIRENKYI Movement, an initiative to empower young girls and promote self-love, confidence and freedom of expression.

She is currently pursuing a Certificate in Haute Couture at Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City.
